Dr. Diana Monteiro was elected as vice-chair of the Users’ Executive Committee for NSLS-II, one of the newest and most advanced synchrotrons in the world. Synchrotrons are particle accelerators that produce the powerful X-rays needed for structural biology research. The user’s committee is responsible for promoting and encouraging research at the facility, through the exchange of information and ideas between the international research community and by representing that community to the NSLS-II management team. Dr. Monteiro and the other committee members also play an important role in advocating for the important role synchrotrons play in science. NSLS-II is a critical resource for the research conducted at HWI. Dr. Monteiro also oversees a program that provides frequent access to experimental time at NSLS-II to a consortium of scientists from HWI, the University at Buffalo and the Rochester Institute of Technology.
