Operations Manager at the National High-Throughput Crystallization Center

The National High-Throughput Crystallization (HTX) Center at the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute (HWI) seeks an experienced crystallographer to join the HTX Center team. The successful candidate will play a significant role in the HTX Center, assisting with the direction of daily operations and developing new procedures in the robotics laboratory. This is an ideal position for a creative scientist who is passionate about crystallography and wants to work in an exciting and collaborative group.

Position Description:

This is a great time to join the HTX Center, as we are in the process of expanding service operations in support of our academic, government, non-profit and proprietary users worldwide. As a member of the HTX Center team, you will be an integral part of these advances. We seek a structural biologist with innovative ideas about developing new crystallization pipelines and working in a dynamic, collaborative environment. You will not be expected to write grants, although there will be opportunities to assist with grant preparation. You will work closely with HTX Center coworkers in an inclusive and respectful environment, with opportunities to take initiative and to contribute to the team effort.

Required Skills & Experience:

    • Knowledge of macromolecular crystallography and protein biochemistry
    • Highly collaborative and team-oriented approach to conducting work and solving problems
    • Ability to design and perform laboratory experiments with deep attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
    • Ability to work effectively with the external scientific community regarding the HTX Center, including participation and representation at scientific meetings and conferences
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Skills & Experience:

    • PhD in a relevant field with expertise in crystallization methods
    • Knowledge of automation and robotics for X-ray crystallization
    • Demonstrated experience in a broad range of X-ray crystallography methods, such as crystallization screening, optimization, seeding, and harvesting macromolecular crystals

HWI also houses a recently opened CryoEM Center located at HWI in Buffalo, NY, and manages the IMCA-CAT beamline 17-ID at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, IL.
