Cryo-EM Center Director Position

The cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) Center at the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute (HWI) is a resource for academic and industrial users. The center features a Glacios 200 kV microscope with Falcon IV and CETA-D detectors, in a dedicated facility with a grid preparation laboratory, control room, and additional microscope rooms configured for growth. The Cryo-EM Center Director will be responsible for operational, scientific and strategic oversight, including growth of the facility and implementing a robust and reliable cryo-EM imaging pipeline. We have a broad spectrum of projects, from basic research to drug discovery, and users with a wide range of cryo-EM expertise. This is an Institute-supported position.

The position will be based in Buffalo, NY and will remain open until filled.  Application review will begin immediately.


  • Plan and manage all aspects of the operation of a state-of-the-art cryo-EM facility within the Institute and create an efficient research and service facility.
  • Develop a service platform that enables users to obtain cryo-EM and micro electron diffraction data to address key scientific questions.
  • Provide users with solutions and develop new capabilities as needed.
  • Communicate with users during the planning and execution of projects, including capabilities presentations and project reports.
  • Collaborate with Business Development to attract and retain academic and commercial users for the center.
  • Collaborate with complementary resources including the National Crystallization Center, synchrotron facilities at IMCA-CAT, and a regional center for computational resources.
  • Ensure instrumentation is operational and produces data of the highest possible quality.
  • Communicate with vendors and engineers for maintenance and upgrade of equipment.
  • Lead the planning and execution of expansion of the facility including the installation of additional microscopes.
  • Attract and retain research staff to operate the facility.
  • Liaise with financial and accounting staff to record staff and microscope time on user projects.
  • Participate in external funding applications for the benefit of the center or the Institute, e.g. instrumentation grants, large-scale center grants.

Proven expertise in cryo-EM operation and use is required. Organizational skills, and strong written and oral communication abilities, including a good command of spoken and written English, are essential. Prior experience managing external projects is preferred. Candidates are expected to have a PhD in a relevant field and a strong record of scientific productivity.
